Understanding the Learner's Perspective
A book by Steve Chinn is welcomed and a real pleasure to read but it also makes us feel uneasy when there is still so much to do. His wealth of experience relating to maths in schools cannot be surpassed globally. His insight and perspectives in this book make it a 'go to' book, I believe this is not only for teachers of maths ( and parents) but also for any educator who wants to gain a deeper understanding of how we need to take a learner's perspectives. While it is focused on maths, we can also learn about the emotions that are evoked when it is harder for learners to engage in the subject. This is a reflective book honed from extensive experience and practice but it also remains a really practical book.

At last, a diagnostic assessment!
'I highly recommend the DANS as an indispensable resource in your SEN department! As a primary school, we were running standardised maths assessments but the results told us what we already knew - that particular children were struggling in maths, but as the SENCo, I wanted to know more! In order to plan an effective maths intervention programme for an individual child, I wanted to know exactly where the gaps were in their mathematical knowledge, what they particularly were struggling with and what strategies they were already using in order to help them achieve. The DANS provided all of this information and more! After carrying out the DANS with individual children I was able to set extremely focused targets for each child who needed support. This then enabled them to make very good progress and to significantly close gaps in their learning. The assessment is easy to administer with very clear instructions and all the equipment provided. You are guided as to what skills to look out for, so it is perfect for even the most unconfident maths teacher. At last a diagnostic maths assessment is now available!

Essential tool that every school needs
This is honestly the best diagnostic tool for maths that I have ever come across. It explores every area of basic numeracy skills and is able to highlight areas of strength as well as challenge for the pupil. The added bonus is that the concrete materials not only make it an enjoyable experience for the pupil but can then be used for remedial intervention. This is an excellently thought out, affordable, value for money resource that every school should have.
